How to Take Measurements?

You've chosen the perfect fly screen for your home or business, now comes the most important step: taking the correct measurements to ensure your order fits perfectly! Don't worry, this process is much easier than you think. At Modern Fly Screens, we've prepared this detailed guide to turn the ordering process into a "DIY" project for you. Simply follow the steps below carefully for a perfect result.

Golden Rules to Follow Before Taking Mosquito Net Measurements

Be sure to follow these simple but critical rules for an accurate measurement:

  • Use a Metal Tape Measure: Flexible tape measures or fabric tapes can give inaccurate results. Always use a sturdy metal tape measure.
  • The Three-Point Rule: Always take measurements from at least 3 different points (bottom, middle, top) for width and height.
  • Note the Smallest Measurement: If there are millimeter differences between measurements, always enter the smallest measurement on the order form. This will ensure your fly screen fits snugly into the frame.
  • Do Not Add Allowances: Simply enter the net measurements you obtain using the methods we have specified. Our production team will calculate the necessary allowances for the product to function smoothly.

Step-by-Step Fly Screen Type Measurement

  1. How to Measure for Hinged Fly Screens (Windows and Doors)

Hinged fly screens are mounted on the outer surface (the frame) of the window or door casing.

  • Width (W): Open the window or door sash. On the inside of the frame, measure the distance from the outer edge of the rubber seal (weatherstrip) where the sash rests to the outer edge of the seal on the opposite side.
  • Height: Similarly, measure the distance from the outer edge of the upper case gasket to the outer edge of the lower case (or marble) gasket.
  1. How to Measure for Pleated (Accordion) and Rail (Sliding) Fly Screens

These models are usually mounted inside the door or window opening, onto the frame.

  • Width (W): Measure the net clearance distance from the left inner wall to the right inner wall of the enclosure where the assembly will be mounted.
  • Height: Measure the clear vertical space from the top inner ceiling of the enclosure to the floor (or marble).

Common Mistakes and Things to Watch Out For

  • Error: Using a flexible measuring tape.
    • Correct: Use only metal measuring tapes.
  • Mistake: Adding extra allowance to the measurement "just to be sure".
    • That's right: Just enter the net amount, we'll calculate the share.
  • Attention: Before taking measurements, be sure to check for any obstructions in the area where the fly screen will be installed that could prevent it from working (e.g., protruding door handles, alarm sensors, blind cords, etc.). If there are any obstructions, you can explore our additional solutions such as the "Offset Housing".
